The heartache and hopelessness that addiction brings upon families cannot be expressed in words, only in tears. It is a feeling of being lost and believing there is nowhere to turn for help. Over and over again promises are made to only be broken again and again. Going to treatment over and over again with no long term recovery. That is the plight for millions of families through out this country. They are fighting an uphill battle that they must pursue to the end. You can’t stop loving but you can stop trying to change things you have no control over. Families reach out to me all the time but addicts rarely do. Until the addict reaches out for help there is nothing anyone can do. If an addict wants to stop but can’t, they can be helped. If an addict wants to stop but doesn’t know how, they can be helped. If an addict doesn’t want to stop, there is nothing anyone can do. This is why forcing addicts into treatment has such a low long term success rate. With that said, there are millions of addicts that have found freedom from active addictions, it’s not the addicts who needed it but the addicts who wanted it. Which one are you?
